Easy Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes are a childhood favorite and makes a big batch to feed a crowd. The meat and sauce meld together, slow cooking for hours, for a flavorful nostalgic dish.

One of my favorite dinners when I was a kid was sloppy joes. There’s something comforting about that saucy meat mixture on a soft bun with a slice of cheese. Just delicious!

I first served my kids sloppy joes when they were around 5 or 6 and I was pleasantly surprised at how much they loved sloppy joes, too! Years later we still have them on a regular dinner rotation.

Making sloppy joes in the crock pot is so easy. The hardest part of this recipe is cooking the ground beef. Other than that, it’s a dump-and-go recipe and ready to eat when you are.

It’s easy to double this recipe and freeze half. Sloppy joes are a great make ahead freezer meal for those busy weeknights when you need to get dinner on the table fast!

What you’ll need

  • A 6-8 quart crock pot
  • Nonstick spray or crock pot liner
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • For the sauce– 15 ounce can tomato sauce, ketchup, condensed tomato soup, brown sugar, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, mustard powder, worchestershire sauce
  • Optional– diced green pepper and diced onions. My kids will not eat sloppy joes with onions and peppers so I leave them out and use onion powder instead. But if your family is more adventurous, definitely add the onion and pepper for more flavor.

How to make it

Add the beef to a pan over medium high heat and cook until no longer pink. If you’re using green peppers and onions, add those in with the beef to cook together. Drain the meat if necessary.

Spray the crock pot with nonstick spray or use a crock pot liner. Add in the beef and all other ingredients. Stir together. Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours or high for 3 hours.

Serve on buns with a slice of cheddar or American cheese. Smiley fries optional 😉

This makes large batch of Sloppy Joes, but it freezes well if you want to freeze half for later. Just add the cooked sloppy joe meat to a freezer safe bag and freeze up to 4 months. Thaw in the fridge for 24 hours and heat in a pot on the stove.

Sloppy Joes are also great over fries or a baked potato.
