- 6+ quart Slow Cooker
- Chicken breast– you can substitute thighs, just reduce the cooking time by half.
- Pepperoncinis with the juice– this recipe uses 6-10 pepperoncinis with about 1/4 cup juice. Adjust this to taste. If you love it spicy, add more pepperoncinis and more juice. If you like just a little kick of heat use less pepperoncinis and less juice or omit it.
- Packet dry ranch dressing mix– not ranch dressing. If you are concerned about the salt in this recipe, you can make your own homemade ranch seasoning- instructions below.
- Low sodium brown gravy (or chicken gravy, turkey gravy or au jus)- any gravy works! Typically you would use chicken gravy with a chicken dish, but I prefer the brown gravy in this. Use whatever you have on hand.
- Unsalted butter– this makes the chicken so juicy and tender and because of the butter there’s no need for liquid.
Homemade Ranch Seasoning
If you prefer to make your own ranch mix here’s how:
Mix together these ingredients
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon dried chives
- ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
This makes about 2 tablespoons, the same as a standard 1-ounce packet.
How to make Mississippi Chicken
Spray a 6-8 quart crock pot with nonstick cooking spray.
Place the chicken in the crock pot.
Sprinkle over the ranch and gravy mix. Pour in the pepperoncini juice.
Place the butter slices and pepperoncinis on top of the chicken.
Cover and cook on low 5 hours or high for 3 hours.
Shred the chicken and serve over rice, mashed potatoes or on sandwiches.
This is an easy weeknight family friendly dinner! Serve the shredded chicken on rolls or slider buns for game day- a guaranteed hit!

Tips
- Can I make this with frozen chicken? Yes, you can use frozen chicken, but keep in mind it may release more liquid as it cooks. This might make the sauce thinner, so you may need to reduce it after cooking. You may need to increase the cooking time by 1-2 hours. Check the chicken with a meat thermometer to ensure it’s fully cooked.
- Can I make Mississippi Chicken in an Instant Pot? Yes! Use the sauté function to melt the butter and coat the chicken with seasoning. Add the other ingredients, seal the lid, and cook on high pressure for 10-12 minutes (depending on the thickness of the chicken).
- Do I have to use pepperoncini peppers? The pepperoncini peppers are key to the dish’s tangy flavor, but if you’re not a fan of spice, you can reduce the amount or leave them out. For a milder alternative, use banana peppers or omit entirely.
- What can I serve with Mississippi Chicken? Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, buttered noodles, or even roasted vegetables. It’s also delicious served on sandwich rolls for a hearty meal.
- How do I store leftovers? Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until warmed through.
- Can I freeze the leftovers? Yes! Allow the chicken and sauce to cool completely, then store it in an airtight container or freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat on the stove or in the microwave.
