If you are not a chocolate lover- this recipe is NOT for you, I’m afraid. This cake is loaded with decadent chocolate deliciousness! It begins with a devil’s food cake base (for Halloween, of course), then it’s studded with gooey chocolate fudge, with a layer of homemade chocolate whipped cream and topped of with crushed Oreos.
It’s chocolatey paradise!
It’s like a giant dirt cake, if you’ve ever had dirt cups then you know what I mean. The best part is decorating your “graveyard” however you’d like! I used some edible tombstones from Wilton, gummy worms, candy pumpkins, and spider sprinkles. The possibilities are endless!

- 9×13 baking dish
- Cake mix– red velvet or chocolate + ingredients on the box to prepare
- Instant chocolate pudding– we’ll use half in the cake mix and half in the chocolate whipped cream
- Hot fudge sauce
- Sour cream – this is to make the cake extra moist. Don’t worry, you don’t taste it
- Heavy whipping cream
- Powdered sugar– for the whipped cream
- Oreo cookies – for the “dirt”
- Cake decorations such as gummy worms, candy pumpkins, candy tombstones, sprinkles, gummy spiders.
How to make it
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Prepare the cake batter: to a large mixing bowl combine the cake mix, the eggs, water and oil (all ingredient and measurements called for on the box) plus add in half of the dry chocolate pudding mix and sour cream.
Mix together using an electric mixer.
Pour batter into a greased 9×13 baking dish.
Bake according to the package directions- 22-28 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool 20 minutes.
Using the end of a spoon, poke about 50 holes in the cake, about 1 inch apart.
Heat the hot fudge in the microwave (lid off) in 30 second intervals until pourable.
Pour the hot fudge all over the cake, getting some in each whole and smoothing the rest over the top. Let the cake cool completely.
Meanwhile, prepare the whipped topping.
In a mixing glass combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and remaining instant pudding mix. Using an electric mixer whisk until soft peaks form.
Smooth the whipped cream all over the top of the cake.
Add the Oreo cookies to a food processor and pulse until the cookies are crumbled. Evenly spread the cookie crumbs over the top of the cake.
Decorate with your favorite spooky graveyard decorations.
Cut, serve and enjoy! Refrigerate leftovers.
