Nothing says summer like s’mores! This American Flag S’mores Dip is quintessential for the summer holidays!

This dessert is everything you want in s’mores; toasty marshmallows, lusciously melted chocolate, and crispy graham crackers. It’s so easy and quick. Perfect for those lazy summer days.

You could double the recipe and use a 9×13 dish for a real party starter.

But let’s get to it!

flag s'mores ingredients, chocolate chips, sanding sugar and marshmallows

What you’ll need

  1. 9×9 baking dish, or double the recipe and use a 9×13 dish
  2. Marshmallows– I used about 3/4 of a bag
  3. Chocolate Chips– I used milk chocolate, but semi-sweet or dark chocolate work too!
  4. Sanding Sugar– you can find red and blue sugar in the baking aisle next to the sprinkles. I did not use white sanding sugar, I just left the white stripes plain marshmallow, but you could definitely use the white sanding sugar or even granulated sugar.
  5. Kitchen Shears or a sharp knife to cut the marshmallows in half.
  6. Graham Crackers for serving, or try pretzels, apple slices, or strawberries.

How to make S’mores Dip

Detailed directions and video at the bottom of the post

  1. Lightly grease your baking dish and preheat the oven to 450ºF.
  2. Add the red and blue sugar to separate bowls.
  3. Pour the bag of chocolate chips into the bottom of the baking dish to cover evenly.
  4. Using kitchen scissors or a knife, cut the marshmallows in half vertically. Next, Dip 9 cut halves into the blue sugar and arrange in the top left corner of the baking dish on top of the chocolate chips.
  5. Dip 4 cut halves into the red sugar and arrange at the top of the dish for the first red stripe.
  6. Add 4 cut marshmallows under the red stripe to make the first white stripe.
  7. Continue with the red and white stripes until it looks like a flag.
  8. Bake for 7-10 minutes, it’s ready when the marshmallows are toasted and the chocolate is melted. Mine was perfect at 8 minutes.
  9. Careful! The dish will be hot! Let cool slightly and dig in using graham cracker halves or another dipping tool. Best served warm. Enjoy!

That first dive into the crunchy top of the marshmallow is the best!

If there’s any part of the marshmallows that aren’t coated in sugar you can just sprinkle more on top before baking.

Here’s history on the origin of the s’more if you’re interested! They’ve been making people happy since the 1920’s! S’more Origin Story

Instructions

  • Lightly spray a 9×9 baking dish with nonstick spray or lightly butter it
  • Pour in the chocolate chips to evenly cover the bottom of the baking dish
  • With sharp kitchen scissors or a knife, cut 5 marshmallows in half. Dip 9 of the cut halves into the blue sanding sugar and put them sugar side up on top of the chocolate chips in the upper left corner for the blue part of the flag.
  • Cut 2 marshmallows to get 4 halves and dip into the red sanding sugar. Lay those on top of the chips in a stripes pattern on the top row next to the blue marshmallows.
  • Cut 2 more marshmallows and add those under the red marshmallows. (Dip in white sugar, if desired)
  • Continue the red and white rows until it looks like a flag. I used about 3/4 of the bag of marshmallows.
  • Bake 7-10 minutes until the marshmallows are golden brown on top and the chips are melted.
  • Serve with graham crackers for dipping or pretzels, apple slices, strawberries or Nilla wafers.
